Co-opting Immune Cells to Create Collagen for Treating Arthritis

A new way to treat joint diseases could follow from the first demonstration of using immune cells to produce collagen. In a promising development for treating joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, researchers have artificially produced human type II collagen — a key component of cartilage — for the first time using the patient's own immune cells.
DuoGenic StemCells' PCP (Peripheral blood Cell Purification) technology is featured in this Scientific American Custom Media report, which highlights how blood-derived monocytes can be polarised into M2 macrophages and induced to express type II collagen, opening a new path for autologous cartilage regeneration without donor cells or surgery.
